In fact, any one item can be a costume: a funky, customized necklace, a big, bold hat, or even some sort of prop that helps you get into character on stage and channel a new identity. The one important thing to keep in mind is how everyone on stage interacts together visually; it’s essential to be unified somehow. If you have one person showing up in a suit, another dressed like a punk, and another wearing a neon bodysuit all you’ll be saying is that you don’t know what to say.
It’s amazing how you can play something perfectly 20 times in a row and then the moment someone switches on a mic, it all goes down the drain. One of the ways we dealt with this was by taking particularly challenging parts of songs and either breaking them into multiple tracks or separating them out and then re-splicing them together after. It takes all the pressure off getting one perfect take, start to finish.
This record was a hair away from not being produced at all. Syd Nathan, the “king” of King Records at the time, saw James Brown as more of a single artist and refused to finance the making of a full album, nonetheless a live one. Nathan signed Brown and put out “Please, Please, Please,” which sold quite well. Unfortunately, Brown’s next nine singles were complete flops.

“Nice For What”: Okay, what the heck kind of tonal Rubik’s Cube is this? So after a noncommittal B♭m and Cm chord in the intro, we get a main loop with three chords in dizzy order: D♭ E♭ Fm, with the singers using the traditional do-re-mi notes of an A♭ major scale. And at first I heard it in a Lydian tonality because whenever it got to the D♭ chord, it just felt like the home chord to my ear. But when I started to break it down on paper, I realized that the basic loop was: E♭ D♭M7 D♭ Fm E♭ Fm D♭ Fm, and wait: don’t tonic chords usually begin or end loops most of the time? I mean, am I right?

I love a site that not only goes all-in with their features but that shows you the view count of every article so you can really get a feel for what’s resonating and what people are listening to. The Word Is Bond does exactly that, with articles ranging as high up as over 500 views. They also do a round up of the Top 10 Submissions they receive each week, so as an up-and-coming artist you actually have a shot at getting your music heard, while as a fan you get a weekly list of 10 tracks you just have to check out.

Valhalla is known for its digital reverbs and delays that pay homage to digital reverbs of the late 1970s and early ’80s, and otherworldly algorithmic reverbs that sounded huge and atmospheric. The Valhalla Frequency Echo is a combination of a vintage echo delay and a frequency shifter, giving you sonic results that “range from subtle chorusing and double tracking to barber pole phasing and flanging to endless glissandos and runaway echos.” Whether you’re putting mono or stereo signal in, it converts to a stereo signal out.
